The e-Shram card was launched by the Ministry of Labour and Employment initiative of the Government of India to collect data on all unorganized workers working across the country. Therefore, the e-Shram portal was published to issue an e-Shram card to every worker engaged in the unorganized sector and aims to provide a variety of social security benefits to workers for their welfare.
Any person working in the unorganized sector can apply online for an e-shram card through this portal, and they can get e-shram card benefits such as death insurance, pension after 60 years, and other government scheme benefits. Key Features of the e-Shram Card
Unique Identification of Workers
After registering for an e-shram card, registered workers will receive a 12-digit unique identification number, known as the Universal Account Number (UAN).

The e-shram card holder has access to various social security schemes and benefits such as insurance, pensions, and health benefits.
Centralized Database of Unorganized Workers
The portal The Central Government has developed the eShram portal, which is a centralized database of unorganized workers seeded with Aadhaar. In the future, it is envisaged that all the improved policy-making and implementation of welfare schemes for unorganized workers will be delivered through this portal. In emergency and national pandemic-like situations, this database may be utilized to provide necessary assistance to eligible unorganized workers.
Benefits of having e-Shram Card
- A pension of Rs. 3000 per month after attaining the the age of 60 years.
- Death of Insurance coverage or accident insurance coverage under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), providing financial aid in case of accidental death or disability amount of Rs. 2 Lakhs and financial aid of Rs.1 Lakh if the worker is partially handicapped.
- If the beneficiary of the e-shram card dies, the benefits will be given to his/her Nominee.
- The beneficiaries will also receive a 12-digit UAN number, which is valid throughout India and more helpful for migrant workers
Eligibilty Criteria
- Workers must be part of the unorganized sector comprises of establishment/ units which are engaged in the production/ sale of goods/ services and employs less than 10 workers. These units are not covered under ESIC & EPFO.
- Age should be between 16 and 59 years.
- Should not be an income tax payer.
- Must have a valid Aadhaar card and an active mobile number for OTP verification.
How to Apply for e-Shram Card
Online Registration:
- Visit the official website https://eshram.gov.in./
- Find the “Registration is Totally Free, and Click on ‘Register on eShram’ button.
- Enter your Correct Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Complete the verification process by entering OTP.
- Fill in the required details and upload necessary documents in the link provided.
- Submit the form to complete the registration process.
Registration at Common Service Centre (CSCs):
- Visit any nearby Common Service Centre (CSCs).
- Provide the necessary documents and details to the CSC operator.
- The operator will complete the registration process on your behalf.
Documents Required for Applying e-shram Card
Following is required by the worker to register on the eShram portal
- Aadhaar Card
- Bank Account
- Mobile number linked with Aadhaar card (If a worker does not have Aadhaar linked mobile number, he/ she can visit nearest CSC’s and register through Biometric authentication).
How to download e-Shram Card
After submitting the online application, proceed with the steps below to download the e-shram card:
- Go to the e-Shram portal https://register.eshram.gov.in/#/user/self
- Click on the ‘Already Registered’ tab and choose the option to ‘Update/download UAN card‘.
- Provide the date of birth, UAN number, and captcha code, and click ‘Generate OTP’.
- Enter the OTP received on your mobile and click ‘Validate’.
- Confirm the displayed personal details.
- Click on ‘Preview’ to review the entered details, and then click ‘Submit‘.
- Receive another OTP, enter it, and click ‘Verify‘.
- The e-Shram card is generated and shown on the screen.
- At this time, you can download the e-Shram card by clicking on the download option.
